The greater Orlando metropolitan area covers 101square miles in a lush sub tropical region once known for citrus growing. Although established a bit earlier, Orlando became the seat of Orange county in 1856. Located in central Florida, Orlando is 42 miles from the Atlantic coast to the east and 77 miles from the Gulf coast to the southwest. Orlando enjoys a very warm summer climate that averages temperatures in the 90's during the day, dropping into the 70's at night. The summer annual rainfall averages 50 inches. Dryer winters rarely drop below the 60's. The moderate humidity is tempered by the gulf off-shore breezes year-round.

The region boasts, not only proximity to the Atlantic and the Gulf of Mexico, but is called the land of 10,000 lakes. Larger lakes, like Lake Apopka provide miles of fresh water for this water wonderland where residents can enjoy the Orlando area's idyllic climate 365 days of the year. Whether that be water sports from boating to fishing or tennis and golfFun-in-the-Sun resort living is the order of the day at Orlando's numerous master-planned communities and active adult communities, such as, Sugarloaf Mountain, Villa Walk at Lake Nona, Palisades at Regal Park, Water's Edge, Vista Cay.

There are numerous golf clubs in the area:: Hunter's Creek., Hawk's Landing, Mystic Dunes, Shingle Creek, Eagle Creek and ChampionsGate. Country clubs include: Country Club of Orlando, Ventura Country Club, Arnold Palmer Bay Hill and Orange Lake Country Club.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau 2008 estimates the population of Orlando is 230,519 (up from 185,951 in 2000), Kissimmee is 62,291, St. Cloud is 28,745, Celebration is 2,736, Windermere is 2,567, Clermont is 13,100 and Davenport is 2,560
Besides the aforementioned entertainment industry headquarters for Disney, since 1965, and Universal, Lockheed-Martin, Mitsubishi, General Dynamics, Siemens and Raytheon each have a strong corporate and manufacturing presence in Orlando. The central Florida Research Park is a major center for industry in the region, including the Naval Air Warfare Center Training Systems Division. Burnam Institute for Medical Research is also well noted.

Central Florida University is located in Orlando and Stetson University in nearby Celebration.
